Bill King composed “Clear Mountain Moon” 34 years ago after a deep dive into the sonatas of Russian luminary Sergei Prokofiev. King’s musical odyssey was a quest for new harmonic patterns, and what he found in Prokofiev’s work was nothing short of revelatory – a chromaticism that echoed the unpredictable shifts and chordal magic akin to the world of contemporary jazz.

But it wasn’t just the notes on the score that captured King’s imagination. In the late ‘90s, he found inspiration in the pages of Charles Frazier’s “Cold Mountain.” The novel, with its deep and effective prose, proved impossible to put down, leaving an indelible mark on King’s creative landscape.

Venturing into the Caribbean in ‘98 and ‘99, King brought along a literary entourage featuring Hemingway, Nabokov, Coetzee, Williams, and Marquez. The picturesque scenes of mountains shrouded in fog and rain clouds, backlit by a moon so magical, played out like a scene from one of these classic novels, etching itself into King’s memory.

Fast forward to today, and we find King’s artistic explorations taking the form of a collaboration with the Cuban-born musical virtuosos, OKAN. Elizabeth Rodriguez on the violin, Magdelys Savigné on drums/percussion, and bassist Roberto Riveron, a present-day Jaco Pastorius, bring a rhythmic adventure and improvisational prowess that resonates from the downbeat to the very last note. Their heartbeat, pulsating and unifying, turns each composition into a vibrant narrative that transcends boundaries, leaving an everlasting impression on the Toronto cultural scene.
