about
Bill King – Soul Street – 7 ARTS
The nightclub is the soul centre of many an urban area – the place where we dance, we listen, we eat, we party and let loose. With the ravages of global pandemic musicians, waitresses, bartenders, managers, cooks and kitchen help find themselves on shaky ground facing closures and loss of employment. The photo on the cover of “Soul Street” was taken just ahead of where I played most weekends, N’awlins Jazz Bar on King Street in Toronto. The restaurant had a 25-year history of employing the best jazz and blues musicians the city had to offer before recently closing. Streets, as such, have a vibe.
We remember the giants, the venues with class and traction. Clubs come and go, but the memories of the great ones linger forever: Berlin’s (Berghain), Miami, (Space Miami), Manchester, England (Hacienda), Los Angeles (The Roxy), Tokyo, (The Womb), London (Ministry of Sound), NYC – (The Cotton Club, Tunnel, CBGB, Studio 54), Toronto (El McCambo, Orbit Room, Horseshoe Tavern ) New Orleans (Louisiana Music Factory, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro) Memphis (B.B. King’s Blues Club, Blues Hall).
“Soul Street” is my postcard written and addressed with love and respect to everyone who’s ever come under the spell of a night out. And to those behind the walls, counters and tables who lit up the night with sound, fine food and service. Cheers!
