about

In the early ’60s, I was fortunate to catch the Cannonball Adderley Quintet live at the Brown Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky. It was one of those eyepopping soul searching moments. Not only did the band swing hard bop, but they also played some of the most blues inspired compositions. 1967 the group hit paydirt with keyboardist Joe Zawinul’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” from Live at the Club. Souljazz now had an undisputed champion – a song any jam band could sink its teeth in. Slow and easy, big dynamics and what a melody? Fifty-three years later, I’m still playing on the bandstand.

“Have Mercy Joe!” is my ode to the guy who gave us Weather Report and The Zawinul Syndicate. And to think it all began with the Maynard Ferguson Big Band, singer Dinah Washington, Cannonball and beyond. Zawinul hit paydirt a second time with “Birdland,” another grand composition rich in its melodic colours and harmonic complexity with Weather Report.

“Have Mercy Joe!” began as an eight-bar loop – morphed into a short motif played on Fender Rhodes – a full-blown mix of loops and live – then stipped down to the basics – Bill King keyboards, bass – Dubmatix drums, guitar and percussion. Guesting – Rebecca Hennessey trumpet and Alison Young, capturing a taste of Cannonball on alto sax and tenor.
