about

Whether steppin’ out or steppin’ around a man has got to put leather to the ground. A good pair of shoes will get you just about anywhere. Every time I catch those black and whites of the Nicholas Brothers effortlessly gliding and sliding down a staircase I think back to when the dance was a bit more complicated and athletic. That is not to say contemporary dance doesn’t click the bones.

The J&B’s arrest the beat to where the pocket reaches deep. Back when Sam & Dave were saying, “I Thank You” and the clavinet became a gamechanger and a funky sidekick to rhythm guitar and the open spaces wired bluer. Along comes the Commodores and “Machine Gun” – the clavinet stung and sung like a squadron of killer bees. Herbie and the Headhunters hot wired the keys and guitar to rebound off both the clavinet and wah-wah pedal leaving the groove to percolate and steam along until the long fade.

Brother Strut is that leap back in time when New Orleans and Memphis crossed paths in the late ‘60s. A steady but infectious groove and soul force horns in play. The Kings came to this dividing duty. Jesse King built the groove from the bottom up – drums, then bass, then guitar. Bill King scripted a range of horn lines and provided those clavinet and organ interludes. From Paris, France the Booom Hornz – Cedric Munsch & Romain Pivard hit all the right Soulsville U.S.A. stops.

Come step with the J&B’s – pull out those wide bellbottoms and put on those ‘60s vintage big heels and strut your stuff.
